Water sports can be hazardous in Bali

This last week in Bali 2 tourists died while enjoying water sports. The first was a 40 year old Australian who was rescued from drowning on Kuta beach. He was hit by large waves while swimming, and though revived by life guards, passed away at BIMC in Kuta.

The second fatality was a Taiwanese tourist diving in shallow water on Nusa Lembongan. Kao Chin Hsien (42), felt unwell and suffered a heart attack while diving. Bali does have some great water sports, including some of the best surfing in the world. The danger for most tourists is getting caught in a current whiel swimming and being dragged into big surf. If you do find yourself unable to get back to shore, do not panic. Try to swim diagonally back to the beach, NOT straight in. Usually riptides are not that wide and you can swim out of them. If you have small kids, be very careful about letting them play in the water, if you are aware of strong surf. THe besty places to takw young kids to the beach is Nusa Dua and Sanur, as the waves break off the reef and not straight not the beach.

Second Australian man feared drowned in Bali

A second Australian man is feared dead in Bali, a day after a fellow Aussie surfer drowned at Seminyak beach. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, a 30 year old man from Victoria was missing after surfing at Uluwatu, Bali’s premier surf break.

A friend of mine told me about a situation he had at Uluwatu one time. The swell was up and the waves were lining up. He wiped out and got 2 double hold-downs, meaning he was held under water by successive waves. He made it but said it was very close.

Big waves and strong currents make Bali a fun destination, but one where you must exercise caution.

Puri Etnik offering deals in Legian Bali

Puri Etnik is a budget hotel in Legian. Situated between Jl. Melasti and Jl. Benesari, Puri Etnik is just 70 meters from the beach. Rooms are $99 per person for a 10day package including breakfast.

Here’s more from news.com.au

The advantages of staying at this hotel are access to beach, shopping and nightlife. It may not be ’scenicville’, or super traditional, but the area offers you a lot of creature comforts. Head down Jl. Legian and you’ll see Nero Italian restaurant, Aroma’s coffee shop, Kopi Pot and Fuel. For the older crowd, head up Jl. Legian to Peanuts, on the corner of Jl. Melasti. Puri Etnik has it owns cafe, Cafe Etnik, right on Jl. Legian, which makes a handy place to grab a bite and watch the scene.

Australian drowns off of East Bali

An elderly Australian has drowned off of East Bali. The 82 year old woman was snorkeling at the time. This takes the week’s total to 3 Australians you have come to grief in the ocean.

On saturday a surfer drowned off of Seminyak beach, and on Sunday a surfer was listed as missing after surfing at Uluwatu. Scary stull and shows just how easily you can get into trouble. I almost drowned in QLD Australia years ago and it is a terrifying realization, when it happens. The safest way to snorkel in Bali, is to go with a group and hire a boat.
